DIY Modern Laundry Room Shelf
One of my most asked questions besides light fixtures & rugs is how we made our shelving in our bathroom, laundry room and kitchen. It’s honestly so cheap and I’m here today to show you how we made our DIY Modern laundry room shelf!
If you have access to old weathered wood, this is best. If not, you can purchase a 2″ x 8″ x 8″ piece of wood from your local hardware store. They can even make the cuts for you. Our shelves our typically 3′ in length. But for our Laundry room, we did a custom length to fit perfectly over our washer and dryer. It’s a good idea if you want that custom built in look, but you don’t have money to build one or hire a contractor.
We have our right above our washer and dryer to hide the pipes and such, but if you look here, you can see how we had it higher up on the wall with our last washer/dryer.
Shop List for DIY Laundry Room Shelf
- Pine 2″x8″x8″ ( We bought one, but depending how many shelves you are doing, you may need more )
- These Brackets
- Stain or Paint
- Drywall Anchors ( Trust me, you don’t want your shelf ripping out of the wall )
For us, we like to measure our shelf out, make the cut and here’s a pro tip:
Determine exactly how far inset you want your brackets, for us we had ours 2″ in, then stick tape on your piece of wood at 2″ in on each end and stick it to the wall. This will tell exactly where you need to put your anchors and brackets. If you have a home anything like ours, the walls/floors aren’t leveled so you can’t go off what the measuring tape says. We ALWAYS go off what our level says.
Our laundry room shelf is 2″ over top of our washer and dryer for a perfect fit. We can still access the pipes and such behind, but it does help to conceal it all. Best of all, the brackets were 16.99 for a set of two and the piece of wood we already had!
For us, this was the cheapest design move for us as we live in a rental, so we cannot put any permanent fixtures or cupboards in place. This way I can feature some of my artwork stacked, with our canisters and some greenery. It’s an easy way to take your laundry room from boring to cheery!
