One of my favourite things to do is thrift, but have you ever considered checking out salvage yards? We recently hit up our nearest salvage yard and picked up some reclaimed 2×12 planks. We got two 12′ planks for 72 dollars. That might sound like a lot of money – but have you ever seen the cost of “reclaimed” furniture in stores? This was a steal!
If you see the front of the wood, there’s a lot of tenons; those aren’t real. Glen actually notched them out to look like they’ve been there all along. That guy I tell yah, so talented.
We also didn’t stain this piece – this is actually the colour of the reclaimed wood. I KNOW, my mind was blown too!
I wanted something really beat up – but in all the right ways. You can definitely build this out of pine, but you won’t get the same charm that you do with old or reclaimed wood.
Glen is the REAL MVP because when you cut reclaimed wood, you can see a cut edge. The inside of the wood isn’t weathered and has a different wood tone. Glen literally hid all the cut edges and laminated all the pieces together so you can’t see ANY cut edges.
He literally makes all my dreams come true and does it with a smile on his face.
