Five Ways To Decorate A Small Entrance

January 4, 2019 12 Comments

How To Decorate A Small Entrance with limited money and space. How I decorated our little entrance way in our small rancher for free. Key Factors to make your entrance way beautiful and inviting.

As mentioned in an earlier blog, I’m going to try and blog every single day this month! It’s so much fun and I realize how much joy it gives me to pop on here everyday and do something for me. I’m a mom of many kids and often I feel like being a mom can take over my life. Which is totally okay and that is the stage of life I’m in right now, but to slice out a sliver of time each day for me has been really invigorating! Okay… maybe that is the wrong word.. freeing?

Since Christmas is now over and all of my beautiful flocked trees, twinkle lights and decorations are now down, I’ve been really trying to find joy in everyday decor. I get super sad the first month after Christmas as the joy from the season is instantly gone… anyone else feel me? I’ve always been like this. One year ( MANY YEARS AGO ) I actually saved a ton of pine needs from my tree for literally months as I was so sad to take it down. Yep, I’m kinda nutty. 😉

I really wanted to talk about how to decorate a small entrance. How many of us have small or non existent entrance ways? Me! In fact, I think we’ve had a small entrance in literally every house we’ve ever lived in.

But small doesn’t have to be boring at all. There are ways you can add your touch in any place you live and I’ll share with you what I’ve done

1. Add A Shelf.

It doesn’t have to be as big as mine, in fact, it can be a small picture wall like this. But adding a shelf not only leads your eye to something pretty, but also if you have a shelf like mine, you can put a dish on it for keys, spare change etc.

2. Layer Your Entrance Rugs.

I don’t know how long this will last as I’ve four kids who are constantly going in and out of the house. But if you have a store like Homegoods or Homesense near you, you can find super cheap 2×4 rugs so honestly, if they get ruined in a few months, it doesn’t matter. This top rug I got is washable, so I’m hoping it will hold out for at least 6 months! It was only 19.99 and I got 10% off of that price as it had a small red mark. Layering rugs makes your entrance super cozy and also also draws your eye to another design feature in your small entrance.

3. Add Greenery.

In our little entrance I’ve added a magnolia wreath, a real olive tree in my crock and the pine boughs from A-Floral. I feel like greenery is the real champion in my entrance as it brings any space to life. Real or fake. PS, sorry for the crappy lighting. My entrance is super hard to photograph as there is no natural light from where I’m shooting, the only natural light is that small window to the left.

4. Add A Mirror

This one is biiiiiig. Especially for those of you with no natural light in your entrances. A Mirror immediately opens up a space and brings in more light. So it’s always a win-win in my books. I decorate with mirrors in every room for this very reason.

and lastly,

5. Add Hooks

You don’t have to actually hang your coats on it, but having a place to hang your favourite pieces: Hats, jean jackets, scarves etc totally cozies up a space and also shows off your pieces!

We have a small closet to the right of this photo that we have 3 bins on the top shelf, a bin for our shoes and a rod for all of our jackets. I feel like living in a small house you learn to be a lot more organized and only buy what you love.

Hope this helps you design your small spaces. I absolutely love sharing parts of my brain with you as I’m always being asked to help with E-Design, but I’m not doing that at this time. I’m currently helping my mom design her bedroom and I’m excited to share the completed room with you on the blog!

What’s your least favourite room in your house to decorate? For me, it’s got to be a bathroom.

    Beautiful calming entrance !
I don’t feel sad putting away “Christmas” I always do it on the 26th with vigor and a smile in my heart because in my mind I see it as a fresh cleaning and new start with the new year . I am excited by the new small adjustments I make decorating. I tuck away a lot when I decorate for Christmas so as I “untuck” my old items , I change it up a bit . It always gets my blood flowing to see with new eyes a decorate! So ,maybe it’s just a matter of adjusting in your mind how you look at putting away your Christmas!

Totally! I truly love Christmas, love the glow and everything about it. It’s SO cozy! That being said, it’s been a week since I put away Christmas and I’m feeling super good as we’ve cleaned out so many rooms.

      Thanks for reading! Xo

I have always put Christmas to bed on New Years Day. I’m finding as I get older it takes longer than a day … mind you I have 16 feet of 6 foot high shelving that holds my Christmas decorations, so there is always lots to reorganize and store away. Once done though, I agree that it is nice to redo my spaces and I enjoy the task.

It takes me a few days too! This year we bought shelving to go in our laundry room and clear bins to stay extra decor & all our Christmas stuff. Feels good to be organized!

I am so impressed with your decorating! It’s easy for most people to decorate if they have unlimited resources. The real test is to make a lovely home with little money. I live in a condo that has one of the ugliest exteriors I have ever seen. Since you have experience with rentals, do you have any suggestions? It’s basically all pavement in front of my door, with an electric meter and air conditioner adding to the lack of ambiance.

      Hello Lisa! Thank you!
So yes, we live in a rental too. Our outside of our home is not pretty whatsoever. Here are some tips that I use

-Put a plant in a big basket / decorative pot to lead the eye to that
-put a wreath on your door
      -layer your mats outside

That’s what I’m doing on our front steps, they’re so ugly!

Do you sell the shelf with the large corbels that you decorated in the small entrance? I am very interested in purchasing that.

    thanks

Where did you get the corbels that hold up the shelf? I have looked everywhere and cannot find them…. I also love the layering of the rugs definitely going to do that!
