Our Free Vintage Locker Score

February 16, 2018 3 Comments

One of the amazing things about living on Vancouver Island is that some people don’t realize that vintage things are cool, on the other hand.. everything seems overpriced so maybe I’m not winning after all? ( haha )

Last week I came across two free old vintage rugby lockers. They were in the free section of Craigslist and my heart was literally beating faster than it possibly could because I mean, FREE!? Turns out, I was the only person who thought they were cool as we couldn’t pick them up for two days, and they were still somehow available. We only picked up one as I only had space for one, but gosh y’all. It’s the PERFECT piece for our rustic/industrial office. I couldn’t have dreamed up a better piece.

Our Farmhouse Living Room and DIY Round-Up

Our Farmhouse Living Room

Hey Friends

This January has been so exciting for me. I normally struggle super hard with the ‘blues’ during January and February. Coming off a Christmas high and spending so much time with family, then January and February are just blah. You hear me?

Well this year has been completely different. We have been in full speed preparing for Rhett’s arrival. Doing DIY projects, catching up on things in the house that need fixing etc. It’s really kept my mind more positive this year and the anticipation of baby’s arrival is just like Christmas morning. ( I’m not telling y’all to go out and get pregnant in May, promise ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Farmhouse Decorating On A Penny

October 27, 2017 2 Comments

This year has been a crazy roller coaster and in this time we have had to cut back a lot. I’ve always been one to not spend a ton, but even more so now.

I like to find deals everywhere I go – or free is best in my mind.

When we first moved into this cute rancher it was anything but a farmhouse. It was built in the early 90’s and the colours and style wasn’t mine. The good thing about a blank slate is that you can create whatever you want out of it.

When we first moved in, half of the home was painted in this sage green color. Although I love the coziness of the color. I much prefer white, cream or grey. I find when there is color on the walls it really makes me feel restricted in my decorating.

Farmhouse Decorating On A Penny. Super easy tricks to make your house beautiful and cozy without spending a ton

When I moved into this house, I started slowly turning all my furniture white. I love white, and since this home was so colourful, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to start switching everything to white.

This console above was free, I bought the knobs off Amazon for 4.50 for 20 of them ( crazy, I know ) and then I painted it with Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint to give it a really aged and beat up look.

Second, the shutters we snagged for 5 dollars each at a hardware store last year, and of course, I spray painted them black and then painted white & distressed them.

Everything else I already had.

Farmhouse Decorating On A Penny. Easy ways to make your home look beautiful without breaking the bank

I love different textures and shades, so I compiled a bunch of pillows I had in storage onto my sofa.

The coffee table was an old bench someone who lived here before us built. It had overgrown grass and plants all over it in the back of our back yard. We power washed it, dried it out & brought it inside. We get a ton of compliments on it even though it’s realistically a piece of crap. haha

Farmhouse Decorating On A Penny. Easy ways to make your home look cozy and like a fixer upper home on the cheap

The curtains we already had ( we made them out of drop sheet from Home depot, here ). Since moving into our home in July I really wanted to put curtains up, but the price of the curtain rods alone had me stuck. We had to purchase 5 of them.

My husband came up with this super easy solution. Brad nail wood blocks to the wall, and then screw the wood dowel polls onto that. The corbels are just there for looks. This whole entire project cost us under 30.00 & the impact of the curtains in the room is crazy. It went from cold to cozy in a day!

Shiplap DIY Decor Wall

January 23, 2017 Leave a Comment

Guysssss. You know how I told you about this international web designer I hired to fix some off centered ads earlier on today? You know how they screwed up my blog? Well… they went back on after I fixed it all & did it all over again. AH. SO I’ve changed all my passwords, and I probably wont hire any international not-english-speaking people again. ( No offence ) but, I already don’t really understand coding that well, and not being able to communicate with the person is pretty scary.

SO. Here I am, both of my newest blogs were deleted as I had to refresh my website to the previous day before the developer changed everything.

So lets get into the shiplaping part of this blog before my head explodes!

Shiplap, I’ve literally for so long wanted shiplap walls. But the thing is, we’ve always been in rentals and no landlord wants 100’s of little nail holes in their walls, right? So I got to thinking.. what if we made an extra large piece of shiplap decor that basically hung on the wall? Only a two nails, instead of hundreds and best yet, it would look like it was actually on the wall. Something you’ve got to know about shiplap for us DIY’ers is that we use 1/4″ plywood for our shiplap. Not only does this weight very little, but it’s dirt cheap so you can be glad that this “art” wont rip out of the wall once it’s hung.

DIY SHIPLAP DECOR WALL, costs literally under 20 dollars and under a hour of time. www.whitepicketfarmhouse.com

We made a little cut out in our decor piece so our outlet could pop out as I do plan to put lamps in this space some day down the road when Glen builds me a new console.

One thing you must know about shiplap is that you have to use a dime, quarter or penny to space out your boards. If you do not, it wont look like shiplap at all. Plywood sits fairly flush with each other so you want to make sure that you space it with money.

Secondly, when painting it, use a roller. I used a paint brush, and I had to scrape out between the boards after I was done because paint got stuck inside.

Thirdly, your shiplap will need three coats to completely cover. This is the time extensive part. Actually cutting and putting up the shiplap takes under an hour and under 20 bucks!

Looks cute, right? If wanting to make this yourself, hop on over to Design, Dining & Diapers to learn how!

Hope y’all are having an awesome week and stay close because I will be posting some exciting things this week!

Top Farmhouse Decor That I wish I Could Buy

December 30, 2016 Leave a Comment

Do you ever fill up countless shopping carts on the internet and never fully check out? No? Just me? Yep.. this is one of my hobbies. I literally hate shopping in stores. I’m talking, hate. The lights literally pour into my core and I can’t even deal with making decisions. I will run into a store if I have to, but I know exactly what I’m going in there for and I will grab it, pay, and hop back out.

Over the last year I’ve drooled over so many gorgeous pieces that I probably wont ever have because, lets face it, I either can’t have it because it’s too expensive or I can’t have it as we need to have our personal furniture on display in our home ( We build rustic furniture for a living ).

So, I decided to write a blog about my personal top favourite pieces that I dream about. This year was a really hard one with our business, money was really really really tight and I didn’t have the luxuries of spending money. We are slowly coming out of being dirt scrapping poor, but money is still tight.

So enjoy my list of my Top Farmhouse Decor, that I wish I could buy.

Top Farmhouse Decor from 2016. Pieces I wish I had bought in 2016 but I never did www.whitepicketfarmhouse.com

  1. Upholstered Tufted Bed

I feel like I’ve been dreaming over a upholstered tufted bed for years. I would die for the above one in the photo.ย This one is actually a killer of a deal, so maybe I’ll snag this next year.

2. Farmhouse Faux Windmill

For some reason I just reallllly want one of these to hang in my dining room. I keep seeing them everywhere and the price tag is a bit steep.

3. Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

So, I had a ย mini one from Homesense, but it just didn’t cut it. I then was given a small 3′ real one and since my house has zero light downstairs, it died. I literally cried.

4. Bakery Sign

I’ve wanted one of these for what seems like forever, but I can’t seem to find them in Canada and on top of that, I can’t find them under 160 dollars. I so badly wish I could make one of these!

5. Moroccan Wool Shag Rug – With Tasselsย

This is the rug we’re saving for.. well, trying to. I’ve wanted this rug since September of 2015. I will save until someday I can afford it.

6. Faux Sage Plant

I’m waiting for these bad boys to someday show up in winners or on the clearance rack somewhere because there is no way in heck that I’m paying 50.00 per plant. I’d die for three of them though!

7. Distressed Wood Lamps

I actually purchased a pair of faux distressed wood lamps with my birthday money from Target in fall, and they arrived at my home both broken in thousands of pieces. I was so sad. So note to self, never settle for cheap. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Target. But these were ceramic lamps and were wrapped very poorly.

8. Fresh Baked Pies Sign

I first saw this sign on Liz Marie Galvins blog and fell in love a few years back.

So there you have it, my most envied and desired list of items that I most likely wont ever get. But it’s always nice to dream, hey?

Fixer Upper Style Farmhouse Bed

December 17, 2016 4 Comments

For such a long time I’ve dreamed of painting my already stained bed, white. I wanted a true vintage looking bed. You know, something that you would pull out of a farmhouse. Well, last night at 9:30 PM I decided to bite the bullet. I feel like I get most of my ideas at this time of night. Glen obviously rolled his eyes at me and tried to talk me out of it & my response to him was “Well, I’m the one painting the bed!”

Here’s what I started off with. This before photo is still really gorgeous, but I just felt like the early american stain on the bed wasn’t totally me & seeing as we build beds for a living, I didn’t think Glen would care. Just joking…. that is an understatement.. But I think he has just learned to live with my spontaneous carefree nature.

and after a little elbow grease, paint and sanding pads here is how she turned out

Now I gotta go again. We are busy today with clients picking up orders, staging a bunch of furniture that is getting shipped out monday morning and in between it all going to chop down two mini Christmas Trees for the boys room & our room.

Hope this inspires you to just DO IT. Go for it.

Charlie Brown Christmas Trees in Olive Buckets

December 13, 2016 Leave a Comment

I’m pretty obsessed with anything farmhouse. I’ve wanted olive buckets for over a year but to find them anywhere in Canada was outrageously priced. I’m talking 99.00 a bucket.. a bit greedy if you ask me. I finally stumbled across Middleton Mercantile and they have them for dollars. I’m in no way sponsored by this site ( I wish ) but I literally just found out about this site a few weeks ago and not only that, if you spend over 150 they ship to CANADIAN addresses fo’ free! This is a US based store, so if you live in the US, you can totally order from here too.

Part of my haul consisted of three olive buckets in size small. They’re still pretty massive at a foot high! I had this image in my head how I was going to put them behind my sofa and it would look so gorgeous. I mean, it does.. but the only mini Christmas trees under 18″ that I could find are total Charlie Brown Christmas trees. I spritzed them with faux snow spray to sort of hide their ugliness and plopped them in the pots!

I mean.. you can kind of see what I was going for right? I immediately ordered these faux Christmas trees to take the Charlie Brown trees place and I’ll sprits the faux ones with fake snow too! Amazon is amazing and is apparently going to be shipping them here on thursday! Not to shabby

Don’t they look so perfect with my new drop cloth curtains? I’m dying! Oh and and also, I would like to add a little note about my curtains. I’ve been receiving a lot of messages that my curtains should be touching the floor. I’m totally aware of this. In fact, I’d prefer them to be hanging on the floor, but the fact is, I have THREE little kiddos under 6. One is very destructive and constantly plays at the windows so I could just imagine her stepping on them, pulling them and eventually pulling them down. So I settled for making them 4″ above the ground to keep myself sane.

Anyways, I hope this shows you that you can literally decorate with anything. These are faux old galvanized bins made to drain olives & I just plopped trees right in and sprayed them with snow. I find store bought Christmas decor so cheesy, so I’m slowly straying away from it.
