Grain Sack Patch Pillows [ DIY ]

February 13, 2017 2 Comments

Hello & happy Family Day for all of your Canadians. For everyone else, Happy Monday! I have the most exciting blog to share with you today & i’m so proud to share it with you. These pillows I sewed with my own hands last night.

My gracious and patient mom who has literally double the creative nature that I do, taught me how to sew & use the sewing machine and then I sewed all the patches on & surged them together.

My eyes swoon every time I look at them. Ignore the pillow beside it that says “Our Nest” that pillow was on our patio in fall and acquired some mold that hasn’t come out.

So, lets start on these pillows, shall we?

What You Will Need

-Drop Sheet

-Pillows Inserts ( I used old feather pillow inserts that were laying in storage )

-Sewing machine

-White Thread

-Pins

Since I had all of the above, this project was free. I used the leftovers of fabric from my drop sheet curtains, see that project here. Drop sheets are literally under 15.00 for a 4×15′ Panel. I will link the ones I used at the bottom of the blog.

Step 1. Measure you pillow inserts & then cut your front & back panel to .50″ bigger than needed. My Pillows were 20×20 and 12×24.

Step 2. Cut your shapes. I did a lot of rectangles and squares & overlapped them. This project is meant to be very imperfect, so don’t stress about how it should look.

Step 3. Pin your shapes onto your front panel

Step 4. Get Sewing.  I started sewing all the shapes onto my front panel.

This step goes by fairly fast. It just took me a bit as I was learning how to use the sewing machine.

Step 5. Pin your two panels together & then surge your front & back panel together. Only surge three sides.

Step 6. Last step, sew your last edge together. You could make a zipper or buttons, but I wanted this to be an easy , one hour project for all of you who can’t sew well. You could also do this all by hand, it would just take a while.

Make sure to put your pillow insert in your pillow cover before this last step.. and you’re done! Now you have simple, stunning new pillows!

I’m so in love with them that I’m thinking of making some more & stencilling on some of them. BUT, if you think you still can’t make these and you would rather not, check out With Lavender & Grace. This is where I got my inspiration, but she doesn’t ship to Canada sadly.

Please post your DIY Grain Sack patch pillows below when completed, I would absolutely LOVE to see your new pillow covers when completed. This is a simple project for a beginner. I literally learned to sew these last night and completed both covers in under an hour. This project cost me zero dollars as I already had the pillow inserts in storage & the drop sheet material was left over from my DIY Drop Sheet Curtains.

Thanks for stopping by the blog today!
