In partnership with Valspar Canada
Can you believe we are here? Brinley and Rhett’s modern bedroom makeover has been a long time coming. We originally started planning it back in September, and we started the process in early December!
If you want to backtrack quickly, here is how the bedroom used to look. Although it was still cute, it was very dark and dingy, and the kids had nowhere to play.
I knew I wanted to incorporate a bunk bed into the room so the kids would have more room to play and allow for a bigger dresser. I also knew I wanted to add some high-end drapes to their room.
Here’s the mood board for the room and I’m happy to say we incorporated everything into the room.

I then decided on the rug I wanted in the room, and then the paint colours were born. Of course, me being me, I wanted white. I love a white canvas, but I also wanted a pop of colour, and Granite Dust from Valspar was the perfect grey. It has a touch of blue, so it looks very coastal.
We used Valspar’s Signature Paint + Primer and had it mixed at Lowes Canada. I’m not lying when I say that I only had to do one coat on the wainscotting. I’ve painted many walls and furniture in my day, and the coverage is unbeatable. It is also zero VOC so our kids actually slept in the room the same day I painted.
The colours I used again where Granite Dust for the wainscotting and Ultra White for the room and moulding.

I’m telling you, this room doesn’t even look like the same space. It’s bright, fun and modern! It looks like it’s out of a magazine, and I’m kinda jealous of my kids. Just jokes….kinda
Whenever I design a space, I like to create a mood board on Canva, and I usually start with a statement rug and pull colours out of it.
For Brinley and Rhett’s modern bedroom makeover, I wanted a more playful rug (you all know how I love tones on tones, as my house lacks colour), but I wanted it to feel more youthful in their room.
I fell in love with this rug from Loloi Rugs; it’s the Layla line in “Ocean.” Rug and Weave has a ton of beautiful rugs, and our home is full of Loloi rugs.

The lighting is the showstopper in this space. I wanted something that would offset the wainscotting and make the room feel fun and modern.
The chandelier is from Mitzi and it’s their “Stella.” The chandelier isn’t online yet, but I’ll update this blog as soon as it is. The sconces are from Hudson Valley Lighting; here the sconces. They come in black and white.

I love how these sconces can be hardwired and they also come with a plug-in. They’re a modern take on a library light and I’m totally loving them in the kids space.

The dresser is the ‘Eckhart‘ from Mobilia. It’s super well made and has slow closer drawers so the kiddos don’t get their fingers pinched. I love the dark tone of the dresser against the grey wainscotting and the bright white walls. It looks like it was made for their bedroom.

You all know how much I love textiles, and Tonic Living has got to be my absolute favourite place to buy pillows. These gorgeous cube ottomans in Yarmouth fabric also came from Tonic Living, and they zip off to wash, so they’re perfect for a kids’ bedroom!
I also got the perfect mustard velvet pillows for a little pop on the kid’s beds.

Special thanks to the brands that helped make this room possible
Mitzi + Hudson Valley Lighting - Lighting
Rug + Weave - Rug
Valspar Canada - Paint
Tonic Living - Throw Pillows and Cube Ottomans
If you’re interested in how I made the DIY high-end curtains, here’s the tutorial for them. I also blogged about how we put up the wainscotting and what we purchased. You can find that blog here.
