I’m so excited to be jumping on today to share about our newest project – our deck! Two weeks ago spent all weekend stripping the deck, painting it and building privacy decking around the existing deck. It probably took us over twenty hours to complete and that is with our two older boys helping out too. It’s probably one of my favourite projects to date!
**Edit** It’s now been a year since this deck makeover, see what we stained the panels, here.

This was before I spent an hour sanding and two hours power washing. I did this the Friday night before we started building…and are you ready???
Here is the after:

The biggest reason we hustled so hard on this deck was because I had a shipment from Article that was coming in on the following Tuesday. If you haven’t checked out Article, you totally should, the pieces are so dreamy!
The sofa is super comfy but firm and is from the “Ora” line. It seats up to five people, but fits in tight spaces which was perfect for our deck! The quality is far above what you would find at your department store and the grey tones really make our deck look like a million bucks!
Article pieces are so durable and well made and I’m excited to use this for many years to come!
Also a little side note: When ordering from Article, not only is it delivered to your door, but they also set it up for you and check it over to make sure nothing was damaged in shipping! The Shipper that set up my furniture made me look over everything twice and even said I could call him if I found anything.. talk about amazing customer service!

The coffee table is actually similar to our table inside, we’re utilizing the “Toba Coffee Table” outside until the end of summer. This table is the “Toba” in Natural Teak.

We also got the matching side table too! I don’t think we’ve ever had a matching set before.

and lastly, we got the “Medan Lounge Chair” in Graphite. It matches perfectly with the legs of the coffee table and side table. It’s made out of aluminum so it will last for years! I also might bring this inside once summer is over.

Zuri escaped onto the deck – he likes being out on the deck as much as me and he kind of blends in.
This deck was such labour of love and it was worth getting sawdust in my eyes for three days straight. It’s like a 4th bedroom in our home. Seeing as our rancher is only 1400 square feet and six of us live in it, this space will utilized daily! I currently have a “shade sail” coming from google to give us a bit of shade on the deck too. I can see us spending a lot of our summer on here.

I hope you love our deck reveal. Please let me know if you have any questions about the building process, ordering from Article or the decor used.
Also read part two of our deck makeover.
Hope you all have a great week!

I love it! It’s so beautiful. Have never heard of Article but know I’ll have to take a look. Finally, Yes, would love to know more about the deck. Did you whitewash?
Thank you!! I painted it white with a Behr Deck Paint. It still needs one more coat – but has amazing coverage!
Great makeover! I love it when DIY projects come together!
Thank you so much Erin!
Beautiful outdoor scenery!!!
Beautiful as always Jess!! Would love to hear where you also got your accessories?? xo
Hey girl! I got got the rug from Homesense and the black planters from A Floral!
Where did you get all those pillows!? I absolutely love them !
They’re from all over, but mostly Anthropologie
I love it! Can you make a guide to building the walls? It’s incredibly cute and I love the privacy it provides! Also I’m curious if we can get an update on how the furniture has held up and if you ever got a cover over in case it rains!
Hey! I’ll try to get a how-to up! We haven’t put a cover on it. We recently set up our deck for spring and the furniture has held up amazingly!
Buying that sofa from article! where did you get that rug?
Yay – you will love it. We got it at Homesense
Love!! Where did you get the baskets, black chair & white blanket? Also, what is the grassy plant on the far left? I love this whole vibe. Very much speaks to my goal for my own back deck.
Thank you so much! You’re so kind!
The black chair is from Article, white blanket is from Walmart and baskets are from AFloral although I don’t know the name of the grass. I’m so sorry
Really love your outdoor space. Hoping to get a tutorial for your walls. I’m thinking of tackling this on my own. Thanks for sharing and inspiring!
Thank you so much for the Interest! Just trying to gauge how I’m going to do it as they’re already built.
I’m right there with Leigh. I’m about to try to take on the exact same project with walls. Realizing that you’ve already built them, can you describe the materials you used? Also, I’m interested in how you made the uprights that are at the ends of the boards. What did you use to make those? It looks like the horizontal pieces are fencing wood, but they actually look nicer than that. So, a materials list and basic info would be great. I really love what you’ve done there!
Love it all! Where are the black wall planters from?
Hey girl! They’re actually from AFloral. Super cheap!
How did you hang your plants on the walls? Love the whole set up!
Thank you! They come with little hooks on the back to hang
This is so beautiful! Your motivation and energy is so inspiring! Will you please, please give us the details on the walls… they make this entire set up! What kind of wood did you use and in what sizes?? Even if you just give us the minimum details you can remember it would be helpful! It looks professionally done and the color is GORGEOUS! Please, please and one more please making the third time a charm?! I can’t wait to read (hopefully) your post about the best privacy walls I’ve ever seen…
Hey Aly!
Thank you SO much for your kind words. So we priced the wood out from our local Home Depot and it was going to be really pricey, so we went to our local mill and bought old grey-out would that was pretty rough. It was hours and hours of sanding, but we saved about 50% of the wood costs.
As for building the panels, it was pretty straight forward. We secured big 6×6 timber beans across and then brad nailed the wood into them.
Love the makeover, it looks amazing! What color of Behr deck paint did you use?
Hey! Thanks for reading! I used “Advanced Deck Over”
Thank you so much! I used cape cod grey. It’s light so looks almost white in my photos
Hi! Such a beautiful space! Do you know the brand of the rug? I know you said you got it at HomeSense but I dont have one near me!! Hoping I can find it online! I love it!
Hey!! Yes, it’s from Safavieh! Here’s a link to it on Overstock. Super affordable for a large size

Hi!! Oh la la! Absolutely love it ! You are so skilled! Could you please share how to put the wall together? Please. My yard need major privacy screen and sont want to put up ugly fence. Thank you!
Thank you so much Michelle. Unfortunately we never did a tutorial and I’m kicking myself. My husband built it all from his head.
HI! This looks so beautiful!! I’m working on my outdoor space right now and am wondering if you could share the dimensions of your deck? I’m trying to figure out if this sectional would be too big for my space. Thanks so much!

Hi there!
Are you affiliated with Article? We have been debating the Ora sectional for weeks. We’re in the process of doing our backyard makeover. Is the sectional big enough to fit two people laying down? Looking forward to outdoor reading/naps 🙂
Thanks!
I’m not affiliated with Article. But we do like our sectional!
I love the way you have mixed and matched the furniture! I have a dark Skyline rattan sofa with white cushions. It was really expensive so can’t really replace it but I am struggling with teaming it with a couple of armchairs? Any advice would be wonderful! Xxx
I’d love to see a photo! What about something wood toned? It would warm up the space! I find wood blends so well with white / blacks and tones
