I’m so excited to bring you this super fun DIY drywall mud art. I’m sure there is an actual name that someone has given this project, but I have no idea what it is, so I’m calling it this.
This project was SO easy and cost me only 15.00. We already had the plywood and frame and paint on hand, so all I had to purchase was the tub of drywall mud!
DIY Drywall Mud Art Shop List
-Drywall Mud
-Paint ( If you’re wanting colour )
-Sander
-Plywood. You can use any kind. I used 3/4″ and my art is 24″ x 48″
-Frame. We purchased 1 1/4 x 3/8ths Hemlock and we purchased 9 feet to frame our entire piece of art
-Nail gun + Nails for frame. You can use traditional nail/hammer, but it will be harder.
I started off by giving my plywood a sand down, just to take off all the splinters. You don’t need to do this, but I just wanted a smooth working surface. I didn’t do the back, just the sides and face.
Once it was sanded, I started applying the drywall mud. There is literally no right way to do this, just put it on. I was stressed because I thought I had to make a design with it, but in the end, I just got it on and let it dry.
It took about 30 hours to completely dry and once dry, I started painting it.
I took a paper plate and put dollops of the paints I wanted to use: grey, off white, white and beige. I started by painting those onto the art. Once I had covered the whole surface, I started mixing the paints to get more depth on my piece of drywall art.
I let that dry for another 3 hours and then we framed it with our hemlock and put two pictures hooks on the back.
Here’s the completed DIY drywall mud art – I’m so obsessed!

I was originally going to put a black frame on it, but with my black sconce and our black side tables I thought it might be too much. I’m pretty happy with how it looks and down the road I might even paint the frame white. You know me, I love change!

I was a bit limited in how I shot our room because the other sconce isn’t hung on the wall yet – it’s still drying.

What do you think of this DIY Wall Art? Would you attempt it?
