Easy Hairpin Bench

February 6, 2020 2 Comments

I’ve wanted to make a hairpin bench for so long and the price of hairpin legs always turned me off. But then I came across these hairpin legs on Amazon and for 20.00 for a set of four – you can’t even buy materials to build the legs for that price!

We decided we wanted to make a reallllly easy hairpin bench tutorial so anyone can build this. Even you single ladies out there 😉 Below are the hairpin legs we purchased and they’re pretty heavy duty. These ones are 16″ tall, which is perfect as most benches sit anywhere from 16-18″ high.

Our wood is 3″ thick, so it will sit at about 19″ high.

Glen was like “Don’t say it’s a tutorial because it isn’t. Anyone can do this!”

But… I hope that me blogging this super easy hairpin bench that you will realize how inexpensive making your own bench is!

We already had the wood and the legs cost us 20!

If you don’t have access to rough cut or reclaimed wood, I highly suggest going to your local hardware store and buying a piece of 12″ x 2″ x 8″ pine. It’s very cheap, it will just need some sanding.

You can also have wood cut to your specified dimensions at the hardware store if you do not have any tools at home. We are making our roughly over 3′ in length as the space we want to put it is tight.

Shop List For Easy Hairpin Bench

  1. Wood ( At least 2″ thick )
  2. Hairpin Legs – Click here for ours
  3. Sand paper + Hand Sander
  4. Stain if you want – we’re keeping ours natural
  5. Drill ( You could use a screwdriver, but it will just take a lot longer )

Annnnnd that’s it.

I don’t know if I really need to give directions.. but here’s a photo below. You screw the legs on and, done.

Are you guys ready to see how this 30 minute/20 dollar hairpin bench looks?!?!? I must say, I’m LOVING IT.

The wood we used for this bench was wood we already had. But it was really cheap old yellow cedar from a local mill. Eventually I’ll do a white wash on it so I can still keep the gain and wood but just lighten it slightly.

This bench is located right beside our door to our deck. So it will be a place our kids can put their shoes on. Honestly, since it was so cheap to make we may make another for our entrance.

These legs are so heavy duty and I HIGHLY recommend them. They also come in all different sizes.
