You guys! This project was so so fun and so easy. I’ve put off refinishing our Ikea kids kitchen as I thought it would take so long to take it apart and paint everything but it was super quick and easy! Keep reading to see how easy this Ikea kids kitchen hack was.
If you’re new around here, Hey! I’m Jess. I love to DIY and redecorate on the daily. We’ve started to run out of rooms, so now I’ve moved onto my kids toys 😉 haha
For the last year I’ve seen a ton of Ikea Kids Kitchens on Pinterest in many variations of colors and stains. I finally decided to redo ours on how I would want my kitchen to look someday.
Here’s how the Ikea Kids Kitchen looked before:

I decided to first sand down the counter and the top pieces. The finish came off pretty easily with a hand sander ( Orbital Sander )

I love the white look of the wood. The original color of the wood was quite yellowy ( similar to the stool beside it except more discolored )
I next took all the hardware off of the kitchen ( handles, feet, faucet, stove ) and spray painted them black. For durability, I gave it three coats.
I painted the base in a dark green. The same green as our feature wall in our entrance.
Lastly, I stopped burlap to the back side of the cabinet to give it a look of cane which is super in right now. Unfortunately it’s super expensive to buy caning weave in Canada.
This Ikea hack cost me nothing as we had everything on hand!

I would highly recommend putting a varnish on your Ikea Kids Kitchen so it doesn’t get marked up over time. You could also use a wax. I prefer varnish as it goes on much faster!

Let me know what you think of my Ikea Kids Kitchen Hack in the comments and of course, I would love if you shared!

I love this so much! How did you make the counter with the under mount sink?
What is the green color called?
I love love love how you redid this!!! How has the paint held up over the year? What varnish or wax do you recommend for the top coat? Thanks so much!
Hey! It’s held up really well! We gave it away a few months ago as our kids no longer played with it!
I used a water based matte varnish!
